VO2max( milliliters of oxygen per kg of body weight per minute, ml/kg/min) or maximum oxygen consumption is the maximum amount of oxygen a person can utilize per minute of work. A measure of the bodies ability to transport and use oxygen during exercise, which can reflect the individuals physical fitness level. A treadmill is the likely tool used to test VO2max. The test subject will be put through a graded exercise session at which the intensity will increase and the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels will be recorded. VO2 max is reached when oxygen intake remains constant despite the progressive increase in workload.
Maximum Oxygen Consumption(VO2 max) is widely accepted as the single best measure of ones cardiovascular fitness level or maximal aerobic ability. Men Typically measure 40-60% higher VO2 max values than women. Check out the VO2 max examples below.
- Average untrained male = 45 ml/kg/min
- Average untrained female = 38 ml/kg/min
- World class male athletes (rowing, cycling) = 75 ml/kg/min
- Cross Country Skier Bjorn Daehlie = 96 ml/kg/min
- Thorough Bred Horses = 180 ml/kg/min
- Iditarod Trail Sled Dogs = 240 ml/kg/min
Many variables can affect the bodies VO2 max: age, gender, fitness level and action of the ventilatory muscles. Regular exercise and physical activities are the best way to increase your bodies ability to uptake oxygen. The greater amount of oxygen your body can transport the better your body will operate.
