Exposed Meal — Why a salad isn’t always the best choice!

My Body Structure’s Healthy Eating Tips

By: Toni Davis Foushee, ACSM, PFT

A while back I was having a conversation with one of my clients about her nutrition. This is something we do during every session as she recites to me what she ate and how many calories are in that particular food. She started off the conversation with, “I did something very bad that I didn’t realize how bad it was until I got home to put it in my food journal.” She went on to describe that she went to Cheddar’s restaurant and ordered a salad. Salads are suppose to be the healthier choice when going out to eat, right? Wrong! She ordered a Chicken And Shrimp Asian Salad. When she got home and entered the food into her online food journal she found out that the salad had over 1700 calories! That was more than her suggested caloric intake! A common misunderstanding when going out to eat at a restaurant is “I’ll just get a salad, that’s the healthiest choice.” Not always. I would advise that if you know before hand what restaurant you are going to, go online look up the menu and look up the calories in that food. It is something that will take only a few minutes and will save you from pounds later on! Here is the nutritional info on that particular salad:

Here are healthier options when eating at Cheddar’s restaurant:  Lemon Pepper Chicken, Grilled Atlantic Salmon, Grilled Catfish, Grilled Tilapia with Mango Salsa and Key West Chicken and Shrimp.  These items are grilled and do not have a heavy coating of batter, sauce or butter.
